An arranged marriage is a marriage set up by someone other than the groom and bride. This is an old tradition that has its roots in royalty and aristocracy. Despite being a tradition mostly dropped in Europe and the Americas, this is still commonly practiced in Africa, Asian and the Middle East.
Some viewers may have the impression that arranged marriages lead to unhappy marriages because of the way Sky and Diaspro's engagement ended and Diaspro's subsequent appearances in the series. While Diaspro's actions are debatable, it should be made clear that arranged marriages do not necessarily lead to unhappy marriages.
The "unhappy arranged marriage" stigma is mainly associated with the arguments that it is against a person's basic right to choose and love takes a backseat in a relationship among others. I'm sure that many of us imagine that Sky would have been miserable if he had stayed with Diaspro judging by Diaspro's vain personality.
To start off, an arranged marriage is not a forced marriage. A forced marriage is a marriage in which one or both parties is married against his or her consent. Even though Magix's technology is centuries ahead of Earth's, royalty and nobility is still recognised and seems to be very popular. It is an interesting juxtaposition, but I believe that the magical universe has enough common sense to admit that the couple in the arranged marriage should be consenting.
Secondly, while love is important, it is not the most important part in a marriage. According to the Collins English Dictionary, the word "marriage" is defined as "the state or relationship of being husband and wife." Most other dictionaries more or less define marriage has just a ceremony or contract stating that "This woman belongs to this man." No one ever said that love had to be involved in a marriage, like in marriages of convienence.
Just because two people are arranged to be married, it does not mean that they will be unhappy after they say, "I do," for the rest of their lives. Some of them will just push through the adversity and look at the positives. The couple can develop love for each other as time goes by.
As for the nature of Diaspro and Sky's relationship, there is literally nothing known about the why of their engagement. Therefore, we shouldn't jump the gun. If their parents or whoever set them up wanted them married, they probably had a good reason.
